Separation of debris
Please be advised that everyday garbage from households and businesses CANNOT be mixed with debris from the flood. It is essential that you keep these two waste streams separate as the landfill cannot accept regular waste that is mixed with flood waste. Broome County intends to apply for FEMA assistance for the cost of recovery from this event. FEMA assistance may be available for individuals, families, and businesses. Keeping the garbage separated is also potentially advantageous to you because FEMA will only reimburse for the disposal of flood related debris So, whether you use a private hauler or you have municipal collection, please keep track any money you spend to clean up your property following the flood. You must be able to distinguish between money you spend on flood clean up, and money you would have spent anyway to dispose of everyday garbage had there been no flood. If individuals improperly dispose of debris, such as paint cans into the street, this could potentially become a hazard to others, including neighbors, children, pets, etc. Hazardous materials, pesticides, and other regulated household waste should not be put into the flood debris removal pile. The county already has an ongoing program with household hazardous waste disposal and you can find the details at http://gobroomecounty.com/solidwaste/hazwaste.
